Civil Rights

[This is a work in progress.]

No person deserves less civil rights than any other person. Civil rights are those rights protected by both the individual and the state, separately from personal beliefs, religions, and world views. Especially in a nation like the United States of America where most people are single, wait until later in life to have children, and reflect a variety of consensual adult relationships, gender identities, and sexual lifestyles, it is past time to eliminate special rights. It is also past time to separate the civil rights rightfully upheld by the individual and the state from private traditions and beliefs.

Existence

All people have a basic civil right to their existence and to terminating their existence at their discretion. Civil Unions

Marriage is both a tradition and a civil right. However, it has been impossible to separate these while trying to provide consenting adults such as gay and lesbian couples the right to marry. Therefore, a civil union shall become the only state recognized legal contract between consenting adults, carrying with it the same rights, privileges, benefits, and responsibilities that the civil components of marriage carry today and as improved in the future. Civil unions shall be immediately available to those consenting adults who agree to be joined under these legal contracts. Civil unions shall be limited to only those relationships in which only adults participate and all participants have given their consent, and their consent may be revoked at any time, without limit. These adult relationships shall include the types of relationships consenting adults practice in society today, including but not limited to relationships between two or more consenting adults of any gender identity, sexual preference, race, class, educational level, religion, belief system, etc., and those relationships that may arise in society in the future. The right, privileges, and benefits of civil unions demands the responsibility of the consenting adults participating in these legal contracts. Any participant in these legal contracts may revoke their participation at any time, without limit, but shall honor the legal contract while they are participating in the civil union.

While the state will adopt and recognize civil unions in this way, marriage shall be a private matter, determined by individual and community standards, based on private religious beliefs, values, and world views. A marriage is not a civil right but a private right granted by individuals, communities, and organizations based on their own values.

Non-human Life Forms and Intelligences

The civil rights in this document shall be granted to other non-human life forms and intelligences as long as those rights do not infringe on the civil rights of humans. The rights shall be rolled out in an ongoing and irrevocable process based on updated, ongoing, and rigorous scientific and medical research and information, starting with sentient beings, close relatives of humans, and to additional life forms on a best effort, timely and efficient basis. These civil rights shall be granted immediately to emerging human-level intelligences, modified humans, transhumans, postshumans, primates, whales, dolphins, squids, dogs, and cats, but this list should not serve to limit the granting of these civil rights to other life forms and intelligences.
